Slash is featured on a new mix of The Who’s classic 1965 anthem My Generation.

The song has been remixed by will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas and will be released via iTunes on February 8, to raise money for Haiti relief work.

“It’s The Who, their song, and then I altered the lyric to fit my generation now and then have Slash on it,” will.i.am explained, somewhat nonsensically, to Billboard.com.

“It was awesome. I loved that song way before this even came up, and talking to Pete Townshend on the phone is like… ‘What?! I’m talking to Pete Townshend on the phone?!’

“That was awesome, being able to just hear their advice and everything. Those guys are just awesome.”

Let’s hope will.i.am’s version of My Generation is equally… er… awesome.

It’s not summer unless the Dave Matthews Band are roving the country, and the Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King band promise to deliver again in 2010 with a massive four-month tour starting Memorial Day weekend in Hartford, Connecticut. The band will also stage a two-night stand at New York’s Citi Field in mid-July, a three-night affair at George, Washington’s the Gorge in early September and pretty much visit every corner of the continental U.S. DMB will be supported by a wide variety of artists throughout their trek, including the Zac Brown Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Govt. Mule, and Ben Harper & Relentless7.

Check out photos of Dave Matthews Band onstage with Willie Nelson at Fenway Park.

There is one curious hole in the itinerary: a week-long gap between a June 8th show in Mansfield, Massachusetts and the June 15th show in Cincinnati, Ohio. Are DMB going on a quick vacation mid-tour, or are they maybe performing at a certain Tennessee music festival that takes place June 10-13th? We’ll find out soon. Until then, get the full Dave Matthews Band tour details below:

Members of Midnight Oil have teamed with Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie to form a new surf band, which could eventually tour popular surf spots around the world. The band, called the Break, wrote an album of 15 tracks in nine days, according to various Australia’s Herald Sun. An album, ‘Church of the Open Sky,’ is set to be released in Australia in April.

While the Australian-based Midnight Oil is known for its politically-charged songs, the Break’s music will be mostly instrumental. The band will include Oils members Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey. The band’s lead singer, Peter Garrett, is currently the Minister for the Environment in Australia.

In its early days, Midnight Oil actually played to surf crowds before gaining a wider following. Early songs included ‘Surfing With a Spoon’ and ‘Surf’s Up.’ The Violent Femmes, from Milwaukee, had less of a surf connection, though songs like ‘Girl Trouble’ featured surf guitar. Ritchie first met the guys from Midnight Oil while both bands toured together in the 80s. In 2006, Ritchie moved to Australia.

The Break plans to tour Australia in conjunction with the album’s release. If the record and tour are successful, they might perform internationally — including the West Coast — at places where surfing is popular.

And just in case you’ve seen the exhibit already — if you’re a Springsteen fan, you probably have — the Rock Hall has added a few new items to get you back. Among the new items:

— The Kennedy Center Honor he received last month
— The jacket he wore to Obama’s Inaugural Celebration
— His 2009 Golden Globe Award for “The Wrestler”
— Various Grammys
— The drum machine he used for Born in the U.S.A. demos (look for them if you haven’t heard them; some great stuff)

From Asbury Park to the Promised Land will remain open through December 31. You can find all kinds of Rock Hall info on its website. —Michael Gallucci

The release comes as the re-united indie giants gear up for a world tour this year, including festival appearances at ATP Festival at Butlins Minehead on May. 14 – 16, which the band are curating, and other headlining shows in the UK in May.

The best-of contains a number of unexpected inclusions, such as their 1993 tribute to R.E.M. ‘Unseen Power of the Picket Fence.’ As promised by Matador, the album “digs deeper than the hits”, although it contains no unreleased material.

There are few glaring exclusions likely to cause consternation among fans, one perhaps being ‘Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain’’s ‘Elevate Me Later.’ There is also only one track (‘Spit on a Stranger’) from 1999’s ‘Terror Twilight’, Pavement’s last album before splitting in the same year.

    The full track list is:

    ‘Gold Soundz’
‘Frontwards’
‘Mellow Jazz Docent’
‘Stereo’
‘In the Mouth a Desert’
‘Two States’
‘Cut Your Hair’
‘Shady Lane / J vs S’
‘Here’
‘Unfair’
‘Grounded’
‘Summer Babe (Winter Version)’
‘Range Life’
‘Date w/IKEA’
‘Debris Slide’
‘Shoot the Singer’
‘Spit on a Stranger’
‘Heaven is a Truck’
‘Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17′
‘Embassy Row’
‘Box Elder’
‘Unseen Power of the Picket Fence’
‘Fight This Generation’

The prospects of a beautiful British summer have been raised considerably with news that Crowded House are to embark on a nine-date UK starting mid-May. Not only will the band be dipping into their considerable bag of hits but they will also be airing highlights from their sixth as-yet-untitled album.

Band leader Neil Finn said of the album, “This 11-track album is exotic in parts, traditional in origin, through many a twist and turn we fashioned some drama and intrigue.

“You will find some threads that go back through all that history and some new discoveries as well that will need to be followed up. It’s part of the continuum and it may just be the best thing we’ve done…till the next one.”

As for the tour, Finn said: “The intention is the same as ever, to get the people involved, to hit some heights and leave the songs hanging in the air.”

    Crowded House play:

    Newcastle City Hall (May 18)
Birmingham Symphony Hall (May 24)
Manchester Apollo (May 26)
Bristol Colston Hall (Jun. 2)
Plymouth Pavilions (Jun. 3)
Cardiff International Arena (Jun. 4)
Oxford New Theatre (Jun. 6)
London Hammersmith Apollo (Jun. 8/9)

An average of 24 million people watched the entire two-hour special, while an astounding 83 million total U.S. viewers tuned in at various points of the telecast and an additional 5.8 million streamed the special online. As Rolling Stone reported in our live blog, “Hope For Haiti Now” featured memorable performances by Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris, Madonna, Neil Young and Dave Matthews, Beyoncé, a collaboration between Jay-Z, U2’s Bono and the Edge and Rihanna and more.

Check out photo of all of Hope for Haiti’s big musical moments.

While the song “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),” performed by Jay-Z, U2 and Rihanna, was the big story heading into “Hope For Haiti Now,” the performance that has drawn the most charity downloads on iTunes internationally has been Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris’ duet on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” In fact, as of press time, JT’s “Hallelujah” continues to top U.S. iTunes Top Singles chart, beating out Taylor Swift’s “Today Was a Fairytale”; it’s also the lone “Hope For Haiti Now” performance on the iTunes Top 10 songs chart. The entire Hope For Haiti Now album currently sits at Number One on iTunes’ Albums Chart, and is all but guaranteed the top spot on tomorrow’s Billboard 200 chart.

According to Reuters, organizers will continue to collect money from “Hope For Haiti Now” for the next six months. Despite the ongoing recession, the telethon raised more than the Hurricane Katrina special “Shelter From the Storm,” which pulled in $40 million. In fact, “Hope For Haiti Now” wound up in the same impressive ballpark as American Idol’s two “Idol Gives Back” specials, which raised $76 million and $60 million in 2007 and 2008.

Guns N’ Roses have strongly denied they tried to ban anyone with a Slash T-shirt from a Canadian gig.

There have been reports that door staff in Winnipeg were told last week that anyone who turned up to the GN’R show on January 20 with a shirt bearing anything related to Slash would have to wear the offending item inside-out, if they wanted to get into the venue.

Now Fernando Lebeis has said on behalf of GN’R:

“We did not advise any security to ban any sort of apparel… If they did, they did it on their own accord, or under someone else’s order — from within their management.”

And just who is this Fernando Lebeis? The son of Axl Rose’s personal assistant, Beta Lebeis – doesn’t get much more official than that!

Tomorrow: Deep Purple deny removing Ritchie Blackmore’s image from their merchandise.

(Oh, hang on. They’ve done that already…)
